Benefits of our 'Listening Ear' Coaching Service

We know that there are times when life can be unbelievably tough, throwing you into a ‘crisis’ or an ‘emotionally vulnerable’ situation, which you don’t feel safe sharing with anyone you know.

In times like this, our experience reflects, that most people just need the time, a safe space and an objective listening ear to run to. A place where they can be listened to without being judged, condemned, laughed at or criticized for being in that particular vulnerable situation.

Much as we don’t have a magic wand to make your problems disappear, we can help you to explore your options and come to your own decisions about what's best for you. Our support may help you find your own way forward.

How Our Service Helps You

Simply having someone to talk to can be of great help.  It can begin to sort out confused feelings, relieve the pressure, and encourage you to believe that there is a way forward.

Confidentiality

Our services are totally confidential. We want you to feel safe while talking to us, so you can tell us how you’re really feeling. You can be yourself. Whoever you are, however you feel, whatever life’s done to you, you can be yourself. We will listen to you, and not try and ‘fix’ or ‘cure’ you.

What can I speak to you about?

There’s no typical problem that people talk to us about. You can talk to us about anything that’s making you feel bad. Sometimes people call us because they are struggling to cope with a single problem that they have.
More often, people contact us because a number of problems have mounted up and they’re finding it hard to cope.
What matters to us is how your life is making you feel. Our services are  managed by trained mental health professionals, so they really know what they’re doing, and how best to help you, no matter what the issue is.

Shouldn’t I talk to friends and family instead?

It can be easier to talk to someone who doesn’t know you, won’t judge you or tell you what to do.

Some people do not have the support of friends or family. Others do have friends or family to talk to, but find that talking to someone neutral can also be beneficial. We keep our conversations private and can't pass the information you give us onto anyone else you know, and we won't let our personal opinions influence the conversation, or insist on giving advice that you wouldn't wish to follow.

The kind of issues we support people through

There is no typical reason someone might make contact with us, just as there is no typical person who contacts Relate-Kenya.

All sessions are confidential and we don’t keep any detailed records about why people come to us, however some common reasons people contact us are:

•    relationship and family problems
•    insecurities regarding your marriage
•    loss, including loss of a friend or a family member through bereavement
•    financial worries
•    job-related stress
•    school / college or study-related stress
•    loneliness and isolation
•    depression
•    painful and/or disabling physical illness
•    heavy use of or dependency on alcohol or other drugs
•    history of earlier suicide attempts or self harming

Please note this list is not exclusive. Whatever your situation, we will talk it through with you. Please make contact, don’t leave it until it becomes a crisis. 

What happens when you come for your session

To access this service, all you have to do is follow our online procedures, by completing our online pre-assessment form followed by booking yourself an appointment.

What to expect in a session

1. You talk, we listen

We listen to you and help you talk through your concerns, worries and troubles.
We’ll focus on your thoughts and feelings rather than going into the details, so we may ask questions to help explore how you feel.

2. How focusing on feelings helps

You'll be able to see things more clearly. You'll be able to think much more clearly about what your options are. Sometimes people need to cry or show how angry they are at life, or go over their thoughts and feelings several times to make sense of them, and that’s fine.

We won’t tell you what you should do. We won’t make decisions for you, and we'll support the decisions you make. You are the expert on your own life. Our advice or opinions are not important. It’s not about us and we don’t impose any personal attitudes or beliefs on you.

3. Ending the session
You can end the conversation when you’re ready to.
